Who said I wanted to take anything? I think it’s a fucking pointless scheme. Even if you’re not working, not on benefits, not caring for anyone, and childless, all you have to do is pay less than £200 in class 2 contributions. The only people that don’t qualify are ones that don’t know they need to.

Your previous message explained exactly nothing. And I already know how you qualify. My point is it’s incredibly easy to qualify whether you work or not so I don’t understand who made those the rules or why, hardly anyone should be missing out.

There’s contribution based JSA and regular. You can get contribution based even if you quit your job, IIRC it only runs for 6 months. If you’ve only been working a year and then quit you have to wait the penalty period before you’re allowed on regular JSA.

It’s a very weird system that excludes a very small percentage of people that didn’t know they had to do something specific for a year to count. I don’t really know who it’s designed to deny pension to, especially as you can skip about 15 years anyway and still get the full pension.

Yes, as I said, plenty of people get a pension without ever being employed. Also you could earn 120k in one year and pay the NI contributions, and then be unemployed and get 1 year qualifying, or you could be employed for 20 years earning 6k a year, pay zero NI, and get 20 years qualifying.

This argument usually ignores that you can also get pension qualifying years credited without having a job, for a whole range of reasons, so plenty of people get a pension despite never being employed.

I think this is because you have to pay the qualifying tax for enough years to get a pension, so it separates it in people’s minds from things you can get without ever having worked. People see them as investments or something they earned, and other benefits as ‘handouts’.
