As for how American or how political the discourse is -- I do think that the CEOs (now, then) are both right to shout out the decentralized, customizable nature. The lack of driving algorithm means there might be vibrant other communities I'm just not plugged into.

No, I don't get the sense that they explicitly want that here -- but the former CEO has kinda leaned toward it:

I mean, maybe? The interview I read still has a lot of "well we don't just want this to be the liberal space" thing, and still leans toward trying to make it bigger and broader -- which to be fair is very possibly just generic "of course we want to be for everyone" --

To be fair I think many of them actually want to be in competition -- like, they seem to really enjoy actually having the "libs" to "trigger." But that said, you're right that they expect the deck stacked in their favor -- they want amplification and they don't think their abuse should earn bans.

And this is worse because it's not, "Wow, that ignores the burger-eating demographic," it's "wow, this ignores the Nazi, trans-hating, ICE-loving, white-pride demographic, so now we make sure they're welcome here, wait, where is everyone going--"

Plus it's just bad business, such as it is. We all know when some service or store or restaurant tries to appeal to a larger base -- "Oh, we're a cake store, but that ignores the crucial burger-eating demographic, so now we have cakes AND burgers but also what about lawn chairs and pet meds and--"

There's this persistent, weird idea that all discourse is good discourse, that it's healthy when you get a number of POVs -- and that's true, ostensibly, in a perfect world vacuum. But this isn't a vacuum. We live in shit-world where we want a town that builds tall fences against asshole bigots.
