Ninefox Gambit! Whole series really, but especially the first.

I had also not thought about this song in literal years, and yet it was there, waiting in the mental back catalogue for the right moment.

And re: the king part, a good deal of the novel is spent waiting for that to go through court proceedings.

Exactly this. It feels to me like a novel that believes in incremental change, peaceful protest and trying to enact good things through the existing processes and structures (and the king!). It’s not a criticism; there are a lot of novels that talk any wide scale rebellion and not many that do this.

The Mulai was published by Fitzcarraldo so I was assuming it would be fine for UK. And I would definitely suggest picking up the Cameron Reed. It’s a lot of things (among them “good”) but more than anything I think it’s /interesting/.

I’ve not read the MJH (yet; I will) but would love to see a shortlist next year with The Mulai by Munir Hachemi (tr. Julia Sanches) on it, or What We Are Seeking by Cameron Reed. But we’ve still got a lot of year to go so maybe more bangers await.

Yes, that actually gets to exactly one of the things that was bugging me (but then I did get some context and suddenly I was much more absorbed). I am much more used to more obvious framing in my games than this.

Ok I’m still frustrated but have basically been playing it all day straight so uh, I think they’ve got me, even if I’m not happy about it.

Currently on day 17. My predominant emotion is “frustration”, and I have no idea if it’s just because I’m being an idiot or if I’m playing the game just fine. I shall persist.

Yeah, there are categories where I simply do not have the knowledge (editors, for instance) so I’m leaving it to those who do.

Morning Womble. I’m getting stuck into The Midnight Timetable by Bora Chung (tr. Anton Hur) for Le Guin Prize reading, and having a great time with it.
