🧵🚨: Remember the recent #genAI cheating scandal at Brown? Everyone talks about the average score drop from take-home midterm to proctored final: 95.7 → 48.8. That number alone can't settle anything. But the released data can, and almost nobody has looked at it. So we did! Read on. #AcademicSky

What exam scores can and cannot prove about unauthorized AI assistance: Evidence from a highly public classroom episodeIn spring 2026, an economics professor at Brown University gave a take-home midterm and, after unusually high scores, made the final exam proctored. Among the 59 students who completed the course, ave...arxiv.org

HEY NERDS: tech question. On one hand, I hate Google products because of fascism and DEI rollbacks and data (un)privacy. So I am an Apple guy (where they get you on hardware). However... I hate having an iPhone. My iPhone 15 pro is too big. I'd love a 3 -5 in phone. But those are all Android. Help.

Oh, you'd like a thorough, scientific debunking of this terrible WSJ piece about alleged rises in allegedly destructive estrangement from parents? HOLD MY FREAKIN' BEER.

The Number the Journal Doesn't Substantiate: A Response to the Wall Street Journal on Therapy and Estrangement — Chad M. TopazThe Journal says a survey of some 7,000 estranged parents found a third who believed their child's therapist had influenced the cutoff. The nearest public survey can't be reconciled with that number, ...chadtopaz.comMeggie Z

Update, he claims "it just fell open to that page." Good thing I have 30 years of trustworthy marriage with this man.

My husband is already gone for the day and I just wandered into the kitchen to find THIS. I am actually fearful that this man is planning a pizookie.

I'm grateful to have been in (asynchronous) communication with @kylesiler.bsky.social about his important paper, "The diffusion of large language models in published academic articles." A colleague and I had comments; Siler had great responses. Read his insightful work and the subsequent discourse.

I have no idea how it came to be that my book is "What we are reading today" at Arab News but I am VERY EXCITED ABOUT THIS!!!! www.arabnews.com/node/2652513...

What We Are Reading Today: ‘Unlocking Justice’ by Chad M. TopazThe American legal system does not offer equal justice to all; we can see obvious racial disparities in sentencing, policing, and incarceration. In “Unlocking Justice,” Chad Topaz offers a concrete wa...www.arabnews.com

I am very excited to have this out in PNAS as of right now. This one is a case of: I can believe a thing to be true (increased LLM usage) but I can also believe that a particular set of evidence does not demonstrate that truth. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

I don't use Meta products (no Facebook, no Insta, etc.) and I will not buy the Meta glasses. BUT... I dislike the absolutist discourse that anyone who has smart glasses is a pervert. I have prosopagnosia. An assistive device that told me who I was talking to at any moment would be life-changing.

I am really chuffed to appear today in "The Story Architect," which is the online newsletter/magazine of the esteemed writer (and doer of many other things) @elementsofwriting.bsky.social. I hope you'll consider checking out the piece, "The Mathematician as Storyteller." #MathSky #ITeachMath
