Staying current & informed requires constant balancing of: "I do this for the love of reading/writing" and "If I do this too much I will love my love of reading/writing" Which is exhausting in an industry already losing great presses to overwork, under-staffing, low/no pay, and constant burnout.
LitbowlYeah. I think unfortunately my best take is: 1) if you’re gonna be reading/judging/selecting for any contest or mag or publisher, you probably should have at least a baseline awareness of slop tropes. Maybe JUST a baseline! Too much slop hurts your brain even if you’re reading it for a purpose.
I have only ever defaced one book: my grandmother's copy of Reader's Digest's North American Wildlife. At all of four year's old, I crossed out "bush tit" because I thought "tit" was a bad word and and the bird was too beautiful for that. In ink, I renamed her "The Cristal Bird" after myself. 😂
