A project of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives that pools expertise from NGOs, unions and academics studying trade treaties and globalization. Posts by CCPA Researcher Stuart Trew. policyalternatives.ca

Canadian deregulation of this kind (to attract investment) violates every trade deal we've ever signed. This is from #CUSMA's environment chapter, though the language is often in the investment chapter. Maybe Trump will hit Ford with more tariffs? (unlikely).

Anyone outside Iran... half-kidding. I don't think we should start blowing up tankers in the Great Lakes.

I respectfully disagree. New domestic assembly of rolling stock is a win for Canadian workers and manufacturing.

Devil's advocate response: Trump didn't flinch before threatening the 338s. I get that narcissists tend to bruise easily and world leaders feel they need to play into that when dealing with Trump, but it's not playing well here. In Carney's defence, he said anything's possible.

Nobody buys Canadian crude because they think we're a reliable supplier. They buy it because they can profitably use it. Most of those buyers are in the United States in any case. If the PM/Smith don't want to restrict exports it's b/c the industry doesn't. End of.

Correction: the Online Streaming Act is not strictly cancelled but will be recast in ways more favourable to international streamers. See @mgeist.bsky.social www.michaelgeist.ca/2026/07/star....

I wish that were true but no. The legislation was part of a long, long process of updating Canadian Broadcasting Act and other cultural policies for the streaming age. Huge endeavour, painstaking consultations, union and Canadian biz support. Gone in a pen stroke by our PM.

Very fun excerpt that highlights how little the TBT discussion/problem has changed in 100 years.

What burns Canada's liberal elite is that they *have been* such loyal vassals to now and this is how Trump treats them! Just like any other country, what?!? It is tearing them apart. LOL.

Yes, what is the goal here? Freeland said the same stuff during Trump 1, while she was deputy PM, pining the loss of US leadership in the world. Carney is on defensive a bit about vassalization, which could explain why she would try to make it *seem* like he's doing the opposite.

further disadvantaging [biz] + incr. the cost of living for all Europeans. The new Commission has a chance to fix this + back solutions that build, not break, Europe’s industrial base. This dispute is as much about saving Europe from itself as...fighting...another irrational law from Brussels.” 2/2

Here's the ExxonMobil quote: “This is another example of how the last European Commission chose to legislate based on ideology instead of logic. Oil and gas companies are now compelled to provide storage for captured carbon on a continent where compliance is extremely costly... 1/2

The "new" Liberal gov doesn't seem particularly proud of this Trudeau-era deal, plugging their warp-speed negotiation with the UAE instead this afternoon. Neither deal is expected to grown Canada's trade much, both are with autocratic regimes, both prioritize investor interests over anything.

The investment chapter integrates the trade-in-services commitments and applies to pre-establishment investment also (Canadian firms seeking to make an investment in Ecuador must be treated the same as those already there, etc.).
