Unseasonable, but lovely, poem written for me by my son 💙

An excellent afternoon spent with a dear friend drinking tea and planning exciting new poetry ventures 👌 We ended up talking about meeting poetry ‘heroes’ and how they’re often less self-assured than they come across online. Which makes sense, because no one’s going to mention in their bio

Thank you to everyone who came along last night to hear me and Ali Isaac in conversation with Opt Indie Books - it was a brilliant evening. I was so pleased that Ali read this passage from her memoir, ‘Imperfect Bodies’, as it’s one that I loved when reading the book and had marked up to return to.

I’m really looking forward to tomorrow evening, when I’ll be in conversation with Ali Isaac, author of ‘Imperfect Bodies’, and James Routledge from Opt Indie Books about grief, writing, motherhood, and memory.

Dillon Jaxx’s ‘like starlings falling’ is an honest and powerful collection that explores grief, family, and identity. Jaxx has a real flair for form and can take your breath away with a single line; this really is an exceptionally well-crafted book.

‘Imperfect Bodies’, Ali Isaac’s honest and compelling memoir, is a beautifully-written account of bringing up a disabled child. Here, we find reflections on motherhood, identity, and bodies, but what we ultimately encounter is a deep and enduring love that exists between mother and daughter.

This week, I’ve been reading Erica Hesketh’s beautiful new pamphlet, ‘To an Unknown Receiver: Sonnets & Cascades’. The book contains a series of sonnets, which are then used to form a set of cascades, each made from the first line of one sonnet, the second line of another, the third of another, etc.

‘Mary Shelley and I survey the aftermath’, from my The Emma Press collection ‘The Way the Water Held Me’. Mary Shelley’s husband, the Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, died on this day in 1822. He lost his life in a boating accident in Italy, with Mary not knowing for certain of his death for 🧵
