It’s official: Data centers are slowing America’s shift away from coal

Replace your gas stoves with electric, preferably induction. The Trump regime canceled an $18 million EPA grant to study replacing gas stoves in 1,200 homes of asthma sufferers. Researchers published results from 85 homes, showing significant asthma relief and health impacts of gas stoves.

The fact is that there is no grid planning in the US except to chase boom and bust growth cycles. Renewables, housing, data centers, etc. The future of our energy system is deeply entwined with how the whole economy is coordinated. A habitable future requires state coordination & planning.

But we definitely need to bomb more places, build more tax exempt data centers, and drill more sacred sites in New Mexico.

"State officials calculated the deal could mean an extra $138 million in federal funds for healthcare in Vermont [....] But a subsequent renegotiation altered those terms significantly, she said, and capped additional payments at $10 million." Including solar here because it's a vital part of the energy transition, but recent events in Washington state shows the problems that can arise from irresponsible planning that tries to sidestep tribal consultation. Tribes want solar and wind too, but not on their sacred landscapes.

Filling potholes, repaving a road, fixing a sidewalk, installing signs and safety signals, or painting a bike lane are not going to cause problems, so we can clear them quickly and everyone can focus their efforts on more complicated projects like pipelines, mines, solar fields, and new roads.

I do a lot of work under a #Section106 programmatic agreement written in consultation with fed agencies, state agencies, community stakeholders, and tribes with ancestral claim to the land where we can more quickly review projects we know aren't going to disturb historic places.

There are some cases, usually deeply buried sites, that can have intact deposits beneath a carpark. Cemeteries are common examples, but often historical maps will clue you into their presence. Include historic preservation at the planning stage to avoid disturbing burials and other important sites.

For the archaeology component of #Section106 review, parking lots are usually easy to clear because they've already been disturbed, meaning anything you find there is not going to be in its original location, usually pushed around by a backhoe to level the ground for cars. That destroys sites.

The town I live in keeps electing a conservative mayor who allegedly engaged in several counts of insurance fraud, but even so we still manage to build dense affordable housing downtown in an environmentally conscious way by building the apartment complex on a parking lot.

Tomorrow is the Section 106 webinar, today is the casual meeting with someone from the environmental office of our lead agency which will probably be informative but more likely will be a cathartic bitchfest/group therapy session.

The question is, will they continue to do so if federally mandated consultation is no longer required. The culture at some state agencies is very sensitive to tribal sovereignty, & at other agencies people are stuck in the NAGPRA era grudges. Legal protection might be more stable at the state level.

I don't know if it would be protective of tribal sovereignty given the threats of the new regulations though. Tribes are sovereign nations so they treat with the federal government because legally they are equal entities. But I know state agencies in red states work with federal tribes.
