I finally did catch the con crud (which, I suppose, is impressive giving how much traveling and how many events I've done this summer). All the rapid tests have come back negative but we'll see about the longer strep test. Fortunately I don't have to be anywhere for another week...

I wonder how much is the thought process: -Most artists can't support themselves on art alone -"Being an artist" is therefore a dream people grow out of -Therefore artists are people who refused to grow up -Therefore artists are naive With a dash of "I gave up my childhood dream, so sour grapes"

John Scalzi

Noticing some folks seem to think writers just say clever things without understanding how the world works, as if we're all naifs who just happen to be good with words instead of people with formal educations and a professional interest verging on requirement in the ability to conduct research

"What is my life" post 312: my editor and I are having a serious discussion about how to ensure readers can easily tell the difference between the octopus and the squid in this comic. (Aside from body shape, moat squid are canonically electric blue. Today you learned.)

I'm a day or two behind, but...behold! My Worldcon schedule! For the early birds, I'm doing a reading from STARTUP HELL on Thursday at 12:40pm

I had a great time at Forbidden Love Fantasy Book Convention in Nashville. It was my first time tabling, and it went well! If you go to a con like this, do you have a plan going in or are you just wandering based on vibes?

Think I'm ready for the Hades and Persephone themed fantasy ball?

The Nashville Parthenon makes for a ridiculously romantic backdrop for the Forbidden Hearts Faire.

Counting the minutes until the con floor closes, not because I'm not having fun (it's been a great con so far!) But because I desperately need to faceplant for 10 min before the evening event starts...

I'm gonna go with "How You Like That" by Blackpink. Feels appropriately arrogant for walk-on music 😆

Seanan McGuire

During the Create Your Own Novel panel at SDCC this year, the best proposal I have ever heard from another panelist was made, specifically: writers should have walk-on music like wrestlers when we come out for panels.
