Chase rate is a huge factor. Chasing just has so many bad impacts - you end ABs earlier, get yourself into bad counts, get fewer good pitches to hit, etc.

I know you know this and don’t have infinite words, but when talking about fan’s ’rights’ (or lack thereof) …the same isn’t true when taxpayers have made 9-10 figure payments towards their teams. There is a right that there that is more than consumer choice.

It’s a valuable player but it’s also just a rare commodity. There is always another bat or another pitcher available (unless you’re talking about Skubal-quality). There aren’t 30 4-WAR catchers. And at any given deadline/offseason, there is typically 0-1 guys line that available.

Truly one of the best people and players we’ve seen in this era, and an incredible symbol for the franchise. And his very next start…could be against the Jays? His next scheduled day would be Thursday, which is the Cubs/Jays makeup date for the earlier rainout!

My point is they weren’t faring all that well in the Dodgers system either though. Both had rankings far above their stats, which is fine because rankings aren’t just about stats. But when they fall in rankings, it’ll be more about their jersey than their future.

Two things can be true at once: Dodgers can be among the best in the league at identifying/developing talent in the majors and minors. And Dodgers prospects can be consistently overhyped, because measuring prospect contains a very imprecise and subjective measure.

Except they haven’t succeeded within the dodgers system either. Nor have the ones already at the majors level done particularly well. Ranking prospects is hard work, but I would bet a 27-year old like Ryan or a strikeout-heavy toolsy guy like Hope wouldn’t have near the hype on other teams.

(And to be clear, the ‘one real bidder’ is more a condemnation of other teams than a complaint about the Dodgers or Tigers.)

That’s the key factor for me - this wasn’t an overwhelming ‘how can you pass it up’ prospect haul. There seemed to be only one real bidder and that’s evident by them reason the weakest prospect from an area of strength. They’re still good prospects but just cost control guys, not franchise-changers.

I’m bordering on conspiracy with this, but I genuinely think prospect evaluators (public and private) are buying into the Dodgers mystique too much. We consistently see their guys ranked higher on lists than numbers would suggest, and their success rate on top prospects this decade is very low.

Yep, it was wild and stupid and crazy for them to pay Tucker $100M+ a year including taxes. But it’s worse that a bunch of other playoff potential teams wouldn’t pay him $50M when those teams get 25M+ a year from the Dodgers! Though the Dodgers prospect mystique is nonsense, they rarely pan out.

Yeah I don’t like what the dodgers are doing to baseball. But what they’re doing is only possible because 20+ teams are acting more like private equity scum bags than the private equity scumbags by focusing on cash flow and consistent long-term earnings rather than pennants.

Feels like every year, there’s a few Dodgers prospects who rank unusually high on prospect lists relative to their performance…then get traded…then underperform. Feels like too many evaluators (public and for teams) get blinded by the Dodgers mystique, their prospect hit rate has been very low…

If he was definitely not going anywhere…he’d have said so. There’d be no reason not to. So we know the front office is at least considering it, though no idea to what extent. Not really a surprise of course.

Rosenthal is so odd. On one hand, he very often sucks and says dumb things. On the other, he’s one of the only big writers who will clearly state when MLB is lying or hiding things, like their BS about parity. And it’s not the first time he’s taken a position that contradicts the league’s.

Do you think Schneider should stay on as manager? Lots of people wanted him gone after 2023, I and lots of others assumed he would be after 2024. He still appears to be a great human manager and a weak tactical manager. Very little of the team left is the core he managed in the minors.

I will be shocked too, given his k rate and strand rate suggest he’s not actually pitching all that well. Worth noting of course the Jays didn’t DFA him solely on performance issues, as he had only given up more than three runs in a start twice. Lots of team/personnel/attitude issues caused it.

Now is a good time to get the young guys some reps. See what they can (and can’t) do, get those nerves out. Would love to see Keys, Harry, Kasevich, Dallas and others get some MLB reps down the stretch.
