Long-time SF/F reader, occasional writer. Living in Arizona w/several housemates and a small mob of cats. Recently widowed; my wife Hilde passed away March 2026. I strive for posts that are amusing, informative, and/or wise. (The last one's the toughie.)

I've been occasionally puzzled that I rarely see pro-AI folk responding to some of my anti-AI posts. Turns out I've been added to an "AI Haters" blocklist. I'm okay with that. I'm very okay with that.

I'm starting to think Morning Time actually uses up two seconds per second, while still being experienced at normal speed. It would explain why my to-do list is never done by the end of the day.

It's been a weird but fascinating building from it's inception. Here's a 1905 drawing by Charles Dana Gibson of New Yorkers staring up at the Flatiron.

John Scalzi

My publisher was in this building for many years and while it was absolutely an impractical building, I loved visiting and am sad that now the only people who will get to see the view from it are a bunch of rich folks www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

Obama was not president in 2008. One reason McCain lost the 2008 election may have been because of his lackluster and unsure response to the housing market crash.

Misandrosaurus Bex

The only reason we haven’t gotten “Biden was president during the housing market crash” is that they’ve just barely retained the memory that they hate the Black man who was president even more

Always good to hear a missing pet found their way home.

Mike Jung

Update: LOKI CAME HOME!!! He’s got burrs all over his belly, but he’s otherwise fine, and just had a long drink of water and a big meal. We’re so relieved, and I can’t possibly say thank you to everyone for your advice, encouragement, and good wishes; it really helped keep our spirits up. ❤️❤️❤️

Phoenix had a streetcar system during most of the first half of the 20th Century, first drawn by horses, later electrified. I'd be suspicious of the 1947 barn fire that destroyed most of the streetcar fleet if it had been the first time; a similar fire in 1910 also devastated the fleet. 1/2

David Ho

Is everyone aware of the General Motors streetcar conspiracy? In the mid-20th century, auto and oil interests bought up electric streetcar systems across the US and systematically replaced them with bus routes and paved roads, funneling commuters toward private cars.

"There was nothing for her in Lubbock anymore. She had once been a person there. Then they changed the rules." Wow. Intense, compelling noir from @msemilyedwards.bsky.social .

Well, this looks like crap. It looks like the type of cheap "gold" overlay you see on inexpensive "Best Dad Ever" trophy awards. Don't suppose there's a way to test to see if it's actual gilding, and not from a can of Krylon?

Well, bummer. Another one of my online-published stories seems to be no longer accessible. The URL now leads to a "PRIVATE SITE" screen. I've queried the editor to try and find out what's going on. This sort of thing is why I try to submit to printed publications if at all possible.

I would have been perfectly fine with living in a world where I didn't have to keep learning about new-to-me viruses, diseases, parasites and other threats to my well-being. But this is not that world.

#Caturday Artemis, from a few years ago. She came to us in 2018 as a young feral kitten our son saved from drowning in an amusement park water feature where he was doing late night security. A literal rescue kitten.

So, of course the small-press anthology containing a new story of mine that was supposed to be out at the end of July has hit a speed bump. Or fallen into a sinkhole. Or something. (Publisher's fumble, not the editor's. Still annoying.)
