Yes, the Netherlands is better than the United States. Most places are. But please: look also to places like Pontevedra that have chosen a definitive side against car ownership and use jn cities. Amsterdam ain't it.

This is - again - about the parking situation. Centrum is centuries old and was never built for cars, but they're still allowed in almost all of it for some reason. They'll make a show of taking parking spaces away but won't actually ban cars.

I know I rant about it but Amsterdam's situation really does illustrate what Nye Bevan was on about when he said" "We know what happens to people who stay in the middle of the road. They get run down." This city can't decide what it wants.

I'd even argue that limits by price rather than availability might - if poorly planned - lead to sunk-cost fallacy happening.

I'd personally take a different approach. Do you want to drive a car? Then there's designated (paid, but affordable) multi-stories on the edges of cities that are connected by public transport or bike lanes. Need it? Can get it. Paid or not, the "convenience" of car access is what needs breaking.

They are and they aren't. Parking is still extremely cheap for residents (less than €100 per year in most places) and the *paid* parking earns the city governments money, making them more reluctant to expunge cars from the urban cores where they really don't belong.

If I could do home charging then it'd cost me about €3 to charge it. As it is, on the cheapest public chargers it costs me about €5 to charge it. Considering putting 600Wp of trickle-charge solar on the roof. It'd actually pay itself back within a year even at 10% capacity factor.

I bought it just before the monstrous US-Iran thing and now I see versions of the same van for sale in worse condition with twice the mileage and they're asking more than I paid for mine, so the temptation is there to sell it but no I won't because it's mine, damn it.

Hell, my Kangoo ZE with a 15-year-old battery still does ~100km (~62mi) on a full charge* and aside from my incessant desire to do roadtrips that's always been enough for what I need to do. *22kWh, now down to ~15kWh

The only way my apartment was habitable last heatwave was I could open the windows at night and use ducted fans to blow in cold(er) air. Modern airtight buildings feel (and often are) suffocating.
