This is incredible. I am pretty glad our August 4th, 2026 isn't Bradbury's, but it's jarring to think how easily it could have been, or still could be, how we're always on that terrible knife-edge.
Stephen Schwartz“Today is August 4, 2026, in the city of Allendale, California ....” Listen below to Leonard Nimoy’s recording of Ray Bradbury’s powerful 1950 science fiction short story “There Will Come Soft Rains,” set on this very day.
One of the best things someone (I have no idea who, now) said that year was that Birdman was about how hard it is to make art as good as Boyhood.
dan solomonduring boyhood's oscar campaign, anonymously-referenced directors started talking about how if THEY had twelve years, they'd make something super duper good compared to what linklater did. now, it's been twelve years so: where are these extra-special boyhoods? www.texasmonthly.com/culture/boyh...
I don't think I knew we said "sportscasters" in 1988. I might have a vague memory of it but could be giving myself an instant false memory/Mandela thing.

This is exactly what Lindsey Graham deserves, his funeral being an opportunity for people to kiss up to Trump. It's all he deserves to be remembered for.
Aaron RuparHannity: "My President, Lindsey probably has a heavenly version of Mar-a-Lago. It may even be a little bigger. I wouldn't be surprised if he added one big beautiful ballroom and an arch somewhere on the property. Because he would want to obviously duplicate his dearest friend in life. You."
In the full quote he talks about them needing to "come in legally" as if their legal status wasn't changed for no reason other than racism and to retroactively justify Trump and Vance's racist campaign lies. I just can't understand thinking about people this way. Destroying lives for sport.

Sometimes you think of Sinéad, and think, god, she was great, but then you listen to her and remember that you can't capture how brilliant and raw and broken and strong and ferocious she was in a thought, and find yourself crying.

I get this, but for a lot of people, life-improving (getting out of debt, not worrying about rent or mortgage for a while) is life changing. A sudden injection of 65000 would change my life.
Will StancilYeah, there are a tiny handful of cases where 50k now is better than a 50% shot at $1m. But for the huge majority of people it’s just a straight-up terrible decision. One is life-changing money, the other is moderately life-improving money. People choose the former because they’re irrational.
"Plan 9" is obviously shoestring and ridiculous, but there isn't a cynical moment in its runtime, which doesn't put it anywhere near the running for "worst film ever made."
Dr Pop Culture USAJuly 22, 1959 Ed Wood's Sci-Fi Cult Classic "Plan 9 from Outer Space" premieres. Does it deserve to be called one of the "worst films ever made?"

I like that the implicit argument is not just "if I became a CEO I'd hate women" but also "if I got a job I'd of course immediately become the CEO, so have to avoid that!"
