Everybody who sees a movie has a right to an opinion! I am interested in her perspective. It differs from my own, and I disagree with some of her points, but … that’s cool. Seems like we now need everyone to agree with us. Maybe we can get over that?

I spoke with Wilson about her translation before she saw Nolan’s movie. She patiently indulged my own interpretations, and countered with her own. It can be enlightening and even fun to disagree about these things. Sometimes you gain a new perspective too. The anger over her review is dispiriting.

Then there was this: Josh Gad desperately wanted to invoke Johnny Depp at the Spaceballs panel: "I begged them to let me come out as Ebenezer. Can you imagine? The hair, the hat …" Gad tells me, stooping over and squinting as he gnashes his teeth. "Just walking around muttering, ‘Bah, humbug!'"

I love the Vader comics by Kieron Gillen, and the Black White and Red tale from @marcbernardin.bsky.social. So I could see it. And Hayden was excellent in the Obi-Wan series. Not sure a Vader stand-alone will ever happen, but of course I would watch.

We had a lot of fun making this, but not long after, Sam discovered he was ill. Now he is gone from the world too soon. I'm grateful for the time I got with this extraordinary man, and for the laughs preserved in this @vanityfair.com video. It's one of my favorite pieces from my years there.

I think of that scene every time a Twitter or Bluesky mob rears up in a flurry of performative outrage. The process of changing the world for the better is a slow and painstaking one, requiring sophistication, strategy, and patience. That’s very different from catharsis or virtue signaling.

Denisov looks down with contempt but not surprise. “Your young people, attacking the symbols of power—that they can see,” he purrs. “They resist in ways that make them feel good, not those that actually accomplish anything.”

Neill's Denisov meets one night in the city with a midwestern politician and USSR collaborator named Peter Bradford (played by Robert Ulrich). From Denisov’s balcony, they watch as a mob of young people from an underground punk concert surrounds a police car and sets it on fire.

The role was in a 1987 ABC miniseries called Amerika, a cold war alt-history parable about what life in the United States might look like under Soviet rule. Neill played Colonel Andrei Denisov, a KGB apparatchik and administrator of the occupation.

I definitely thought about those two. Great suggestions. There were actually two pretty good versions of 12 Angry Men. That’s one that really becomes a different story with each cast.
