I think this is a complicated problem. Yes, there's a value in continuity and moving the world of the IP forward, but 5e brought in a HUGE wave of players who hadn't played before. And there's a big gap between now and 3e. So it's like expecting people to have watched ALL the Marvel material 1/2

Waiting for the washing machine to finish its spin cycle so I can put stuff in the dryer before we leave. That last minute of spin can take as long as 5 minutes, apparently - the time display is as much a lie as the Dominos pizza tracker.
