The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is rapidly moving forward with plans to dynamite towering canyon walls, bulldoze sensitive riparian wildlife habitat, pave over archaeological sites, and block public access to one of the great rivers of the American #Southwest: the Rio Grande.

We just filed a request in federal court to challenge the Trump administration’s axing of a rule that protects plants and animals listed as threatened under the ESA. The “blanket rule” provided automatic protections for threatened wildlife unless officials developed a specific rule for the species.

A 1996 statute, signed into law by President Bill Clinton and used by several administrations since, allows the secretary of the DHS to waive dozens of laws to hasten construction of walls at the border. This “has created an environment where construction is shoddy by default.”

In 2023 the U.S. Bureau of Land Management banned the use of these devices on the lands it manages. But now, under the Trump administration, the agency has quietly walked back that ban and says the poison traps can be used on a “case-by-case basis.”

M-44s are indiscriminate. In 2024 alone they killed at least 4,664 animals, including many accidental deaths. They've also killed family pets and injured kids.

Inhumane M-44 devices — aka “cyanide bombs” — have no place on #PublicLands. These spring-loaded metal cylinders lure foxes, coyotes, and others with a sweet-smelling scent. As soon as the animal sniffs close, they spray sodium cyanide, causing a slow, agonizing death. Speak up for #Wildlife ⬇️

The Trump administration barely finished one devastating attack on the #ESA before circling back for another. In a sickening one-two punch, the administration eliminated automatic protections for threatened species and gave corporations a say in whether imperiled species can keep their homes.

Conservation and Tribal groups just asked a federal judge to halt a deal that would privatize and hand over 727 acres of #PublicLand in the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge to #SpaceX, warning that the deal could be finalized before the courts have a chance to rule on its legality.

“Just by publishing this notice in the Federal Register, they have eviscerated decades of environmental protections. Environmental law would normally require the opportunity for public comment, transparency, and require them to consult with experts, whether those are biologists or archaeologists."

These two #Utah monuments were the first on Trump's chopping block, but they won't be the last. That's why we need everyone to raise their voices now to restore #BearsEars and #GrandStaircase-Escalante and help stop any other plans to roll back other national monuments.

These rollbacks destroy habitat for wildlife, push rare and imperiled species closer to extinction, fuel climate catastrophe, ruin recreation areas, and obliterate the sacred and cultural landscapes Indigenous peoples have stewarded since time immemorial.

This was one of the largest rollbacks of public land protections in American history. To be very clear: This move wasn't made to open more access to the public. It was made to open access to mining and other extractive corporations.

The other action will reduce protections for the places where endangered species live by allowing corporations to limit critical habitat designations.

One action rescinded a rule that provided blanket protections for species listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. This rule automatically prohibited actions that kill or injure threatened species, or destroy their habitat — but the Trump administration just rescinded it.
