Fact: Canada has the largest intact boreal forest in the world, 41x the size of England. It stores ~200 billion tonnes of carbon, equivalent to 25 years of the carbon emitted from fossil fuels. The 2023 fires burned 5% of the forest yet still burned more carbon than Russia or Japan emitted in 2022.

I said a while ago Poilievre is done as leader of the CPC. He has moved closer to the centre but his more extreme policies, statements, and behaviour have alienated too many Canadians. The CPC may well get a bounce with a new leader in the future, something the Liberal Party should be prepared for.

In my view, Mark Carney took an unforced error when he misled Canadians about the bridge deal, intentionally or not. It was a rare misstep for him. In the full light of day, the deal was bad for Canada but maybe it was the best option available to open the bridge. But do better, trust is important.

The bridge saga is a microcosm of what lies ahead for Canada. Trump used the power of his office and country combined with false allegations to hold an already built bridge at ransom and force us into a bad deal. In light of developments and a potentially more serious trade war, I believe we need to treat the proposed Canadian territory east-west pipeline to Ontario as urgent, since the existing pipeline from Alberta to Sarnia takes a shortcut through the US. Trump blocked a bridge, he can block a pipeline.

Fact for today: Canada has zero dairy herds infected with #H5N1 bird flu. The US has approximately 1,000 herds infected across 16+ states.
