One of the problems with British politics is that parties lay down red lines before they even consider how to deal with an issue. Badenoch has already done this with her response to Burnham's comments on social care. But we're also stuck on the Government's EU red lines as well.

Agreed about Mahmood - a terrible choice. If Burnham is determined to keep her, the one big change he must force on her is to abandon her planned increase in the indefinite leave to remain period, as you mention in your final paragraph. Burnham must keep a close eye on her and overrule her excesses.
As long ago as 1998 when France won the World Cup there was a certain section of the (mainly older and more conservative) population in France who were questioning the "French-ness" of the national team. They should be proud of how their national team has done in world football in the last 30 years.
