#histmed and #earlymodern more broadly should be talking to each other far more than we do — that conversation was the whole point of The State Drug. Lovely to see that argument recognized with an Honorable Mention from @AAIS_Italy ☀️

“Who holds power today?” #histsci Magnifica Humanitas, the last enciclica by Leo XIV is a history of science and technology essay discussing digital colonialism, asserting that technology is not neutral, affirming that violence cannot be left to algorithms. It is so refreshing to read it today!

As a historian of early modern knowledge of mushrooms, I spent a month in the microbiological department of the University of Turin, specialized in fungi. This was a fantastic experience for us all, we learned loads, I wish all #histscie could enjoy such opportunity! #histscietech #fungifriends

I started looking at this reversal between Venice and the Ottoman Empire in The State Drug but more research is needed on the global commerce of theriac!

Duygu Yıldırım

Even when we look at just three key items, we can see the Ottoman Empire’s place within the global economy at the beginning of the 18th century: first, theriac, a valuable medicinal compound, initially moved from the Ottoman Empire to Italy, but later this direction was reversed. +

In early modern Italy many medicines, especially patent ones, came with a little sheet informing patients of how to use them, when, and for what. Medical regulation came out of state offices and guild government #earlymodern #histmed

Brewminate (Matthew A. McIntosh)

Once upon a time, medicine labels didn’t tell you what you were taking. 💊 Transparency had to be fought for — often after harm was already done. Regulation didn’t come out of nowhere. #MedicalHistory #Brewminate
