That’s hindsight. And conflating electoral success with internal party politics, which is what I was talking about. If we’re talking mainstream voters, the so-called mainstream democrats are arguably out of step, if you believe policy opinion polls.

If they don’t support democracy, they aren’t DS. But yes, there is entryism, just like the fascist entryism in the Republicans. It’s clear which has worked and which hasn’t. That doesn’t mean DSA members are revolutionaries. It’s likely a small minority, but I don’t actually have data to back that.

I agree with you on the “no difference” thing. We have some in Canada who say that too. It’s true in very limited circumstances and saying it more generally ignores minority rights and other important things. I wouldn’t have said elitist, but privileged.

And you already elect e.g. speaker by a vote of house members. That easily extends to multiple parties.

Arguably your existing system is MORE amenable to multiple parties in its operation, just not in its election. If you look at how Congress operated up until 20 years ago (maybe even more recent), every bill was a fight to get votes from both parties. Current partisanship is fairly recent phenomenon

FDR wasn’t a mainstream democrat in his time. Arguably, he still might not be. Though the party is moving back toward FDRish policies because they’re FINALLY cluing in that it will get them elected.
