My mom was already pretty deep into aphasia when my daughter came out as trans. I won’t say my mom was especially enlightened about LGBTQ issues — she only really came around on marriage equality because GOP opposed it and she *hates* Republicans — but she just said “I always knew she was a girl.”

I’ll share something my mom created. She’s in memory care with advanced dementia, close to non-verbal. She used to be very proud of her photography, but can’t use even a point-and-shoot now because she forgets which button to press. But she painted these pictures in her art class recently.

She passed away peacefully last night after a long struggle with primary progressive aphasia. I’m at the airport now for a redeye home, where I plan to sleep for about 24 hours straight.

lol, I literally learned about single-serving communion juice/wafers this weekend when a minister from my mom and step-dad’s church came here to give them communion. He had a few of these with him.

And the most played, by a huge margin, was Leonard Cohen's Songs from a Room. I had no idea. I don't remember her ever playing Leonard Cohen. This things you learn in a time like this.

We've been playing music in my mom's room, since the nurses say hearing is the last to go. We started with childhood road trip songs: Paul Simon, Willie Nelson, Billy Joel. But my sister had a backup of my mom's old computer, so I wrote a script to get the most-played songs from her iTunes library.

I suspect the PR people at SpaceX are a bit flummoxed on how to handle X and Grok. I’ve seen your other discussions and agree this looks like a bad (albeit well-intentioned) law, but “SpaceX sues to protect right to create AI revenge porn” isn’t going to soothe the already-nervous shareholders.

And on the flip side, a hearty “thank you” to the staff at the facility and the hospice service, who’ve been very kind and compassionate, and who make sure we always have hot coffee and soft drinks and food at the ready.

And admittedly I’m a bit cranky after spending the last 2 nights sleeping 30 minutes at a time in my mom’s room at the memory care facility.

It’s just money and doesn’t really matter in the scheme of things. But I hate feeling ripped off. And at the new price (“only” $144/day, after they tried to charge $300/day) it would be much cheaper to take a Lyft everywhere, even in sprawling San Diego. But I can’t return the car today.

I’ll never understand why these companies have all these rewards and loyalty programs but are happy to lose a customer permanently over something like this. Of course, I guess it helps (them) that all of these rental companies are awful.

Also fuck Hertz for making me fight with a buggy LLM for 15 minutes before I could contact an (ostensibly) human agent.
