This is brilliant and it is the fact about Australian politics that has always stuck most in my mind.

Do those numbers look vaguely reasonable, for anyone who has real info? Obviously this is very rough, and may have mixed different units (co2 vs total ghg etc). It is higher than I would have guessed, suggesting some people can cut their personal ghg by maybe 5 or 10% from diet alone.

Quick approximate calculations based on that website says about 20-22 tonnes co2 equiv. per capita in Canada. 100 kg meat per capita. All beef with 60 kg ghg per kg would mean 6 tonnes, so with a more reasonable proportion perhaps 2-3 tonnes per year. Around 10-15%.

(I don’t actually know the relative size of diet vs other factors; after seeing this thread, I intent to do some reading on that)

Adjusting diet to minimize impact is a good idea and relatively simple to do. But to apply something like the Amdahl’s law concept, if a person’s carbon footprint is dominated by (say) personal transport, then food may not make so much difference.

It would be interesting if you or they happen to have data on what portion food represents of an average person’s carbon burden? Say an average North American or person, despite how non average th at category may be compared with the full world population.

And don’t get me started on the biased tea people who didn’t even list tea for comparison! (joking of course)

I’m significantly caffeitarian myself, would be very hard to give up! I wonder about the units though. If it shows per kg of beans (rather than the finished liquid coffee) then it is only 10g or so per cup. Even a couple a day won’t add up to say 250g of meat a day.

There was a great cartoon some political cartoonist did after the incident, which I am not able to find now (internet is supposed to have everything isn’t it?). Fuel guy standing on the wing talking to the pilots through the window saying “how many feet in a litre?”.

Must be. TBH — not sure if anyone will believe this but — I personally nearly ran out of gas on the way back from Gimli once, specifically from the airport. Driving an old Volvo wagon without a working gas gauge, had to judge gas from the trip odometer. Fortunately I realized near a gas station.

One less well known side story from the Gimli incident: An Air Canada maintenance crew drove from Winnipeg to Gimli to work on the recovery. Their van ran out of gas on the way.
