it was built for beer, not burgers. located in melbourne, this heritage listed building was completed in 1937 to 38 as the uk hotel, designed by james hastie wardrop for carlton and united breweries, and it's considered one of victoria's finest surviving examples of jazz moderne architecture.

its sharply faceted exterior conceals a curved acoustic chamber inside. fifteen stonemasons assembled the 9-metre-high (30-ft) structure by hand, gradually corbelling each layer inward until the stone roof closed above them. most of the fieldstone was quarried directly from the surrounding site.

for nearly 1,500 years, the great buddha of bamiyan stood 55 meters tall in this cliffside niche in afghanistan. it formed part of a vast buddhist complex of monasteries, sanctuaries, and painted caves. destroyed in 2001, leaving an empty niche that today preserves the scale of what was lost.
