If you have the time and money to make and store 'a million copies' across a bunch of redundant locations/storage formats, then you have to control them, in order to be able to verify the genuineness of the record. Otherwise all you've created is a bunch of untrustworthy digital litter.

Every time you copy or migrate a file you risk corrupting it, and for files in storage you need to conduct regular fixity checks to ensure that none of them have become corrupted due to issue with hardware. You need to create multiple llarge files for accurate preservation & storage costs money.

What do you mean 'come on'? Digital preservation is challenging. When you create digital surrogates for physical records, those files also require preservation. If you read the article, the vulnerability of digital records is specifically discussed. Listen to people who actually do this work.

Also thanks for not attaching intimation to these images that you can't verify/don't have a source for. It's rare on the internet.

People's guesses in the comments are also often so confidently and stridently wrong. It is an interesting insight into what people do and don't know about photography, fashion and material culture from the past, but there's some serious Dunning-Kruger effect demonstrations going on.

Also, I will never, ever, ever use Tik Tok. Short form videos drive me absolutely mental. The only short form content I can tolerate is cute animal videos. Tik toks that try to explain/inform are particularly bad - nothing worth knowing can be accurately explained in a Tik Tok.

I'm not sure how likely it is, but if we manage to get about 450 more submissions in the next 8 hours or so, that'll be 23,000 by the end of the day. :) In theory very attainable, as most days of the survey so far have been over 1,000!

Digitisation of records takes an incredible amount of time and money. Most archives, even the well resourced ones, have still only digitised a fraction of their collections. In a lot of cases records are digitised only in response to access requests from the public, rather than proactively.

Honestly I don't miss any food I have up for veganism anywhere near as much as I miss analog photography. The fact that gelatin is basically an inescapable part of all modern analog photography is a source of unending frustration to me 😫
