Old Fox found Wolf sitting in the empty station waiting room, after the worried porter had telephoned. I wanted to buy a ticket somewhere, but I didn't know where, Fox, I just didn't know where. I know, said Old Fox, I know. And he bought him a cup of tea & a Chelsea bun.

It was fast approaching Lammas-tide and in the fields surrounding Old Fox's cottage, the wheat & the barley were dry and stiff and golden, the earth around them cracked and stoury. The swifts were readying to leave & the sky was broided with their darts & silvery shriekings.

It was very still & the sky was the dull silver of a mermaid's mirror. The swifts who nested in the thatch were leaving that night, flying to Madrid, then south, south, south across the Sahara, carrying tales of Old Fox’s cottage, tales of love, of sickness, of fear, of hope.

Isengrim the Wolf was tall and rangy and covered in jagged, ragged scars from his many duels and skirmishes. His fur was mottled grey with that reddish tinge which the Flanders wolves were once known for.

Mouse was still enfolded in the quiet, hamlet lives of Bear's sisters. She had begun to slowly get better, living in the calm rhythm of the seasons, falling asleep under cold clean lavendered sheets listening to the corn fields settling in the dark & the owls in the woods beyond.

Today, a very grand hare came right up to the farm gate to wish me good evening! 🐰
