“One of the things I still like about economics is that it takes what people do very seriously while having minimal respect for their stated rationale for doing it. We share this tendency with psychoanalysis”. 🤯This essay is making me rethink my views on revealed preference…

1/2 Economic predictions can become self-fulfilling prophecies. In a new paper forthcoming in the Journal of Economic Methodology, the Maps Team tries to bring some structure to how we think about economists' responsibility for these performative effects. philpapers.org/archive/BECW...

Looking after my 97yo father in law today. To pass the time I am reading to him his own memoir. This excellent story is from his travels in Yugoslavia in 1950

Several good points on the use of LLMs in philosophy: 1) our strict views on the appropriate style of writing analytic philosophy implicitly encourages LLM use, 2) It's not deskilling that's a worry but the loss of process, 3) especially of the social ideal of philosophy as "showing up". #philsky

New article from Leah McClimans in the Studies in #HPS on whether patients-reported constructs are measurable. Interesting criticism of myself and Hausman on whether heterogeneity within a construct is an obstacle to measurement. She argues it isn’t. Open to the idea… #philsci

Signed as soon as I read it. True, some philosophers will cheerlead for free (due to their tech optimism or with the expectation of funding later) and such behaviour is not covered by the proposed policy. But it would still be useful to be able to detect some cheerleading worth discounting.

When a phenomenon is urgent and concerning can a responsible scientist devise a concept specifically to foreground this concern? Shiri Cohen argues yes and makes a compelling case on how it would interact with validity, causal utility and other more familiar criteria #philsci #polisci

MA Khalidi is characteristically level-headed and clear in this paper on the relevance of Israeli occupation of Palestine to psychiatric aetiology

As philosophy rushes to claim expertise on AI, AI companies rush to control the philosophical narrative. Unlike other disciplines, philosophy has no standards for reporting conflicts of interest. This petition endeavors to change that: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...
