When the going gets weird the weird turn pro. Researching and writing about AI and other topics from a broadly effective altruist perspective. On a grant from Coefficient Giving. andymasley.com

No :(

I don't think the Jews are behind mass immigration personally

030

I think a lot of people just really don't know how bad the non tech world is on basic stuff like this

170

Your brain has clearly been fried by not using AI. The models are quite good at picking up background social practices and patterns that the raw contextless words on their own don't always make clear.

110

I didn't dodge it, I was making a simple point that if I'm going to put effort into responding to something I'd like some basic polite back and forth

130

When did I obfuscate? What are you talking about?

120

Doesn't seem like the best target for the climate movement, and in fact of all the things to cut I'd put it toward the bottom

190

For the sake of the climate. In my opinion, an industry that's 1) Already fully electrified 2) Has very low emissions per person using it, meaning it would be much more disruptive to more people to shut it down 3) Is operated by companies that have disproportionately funded new green energy

190

By 2030 the IEA forecasts that all CO2 emissions from data centers will roughly triple, with AI responsible for between a third and half of that. This ignores the embodied cost of construction which also adds a lot. The main question is whether this is a good target as an industry to shut down

2100

I don't dodge the question on CO2. If someone asks me about water I talk about water, if someone asks about CO2 I talk about CO2

God

000

Unsure, I don't know much about their false positive rate. I personally find Pangram hard to trick in both directions.

050

I've found that basically no one asking me about the resource use of their AI chats has used coding models or even anything in the $20 subscriptions

190

Whatever

010

It seems like you basically think I shouldn't ever respond to criticism because it's "emotional" and I think I'm just directly addressing disagreements.

010

Nope, everything you wrote is completely unclear to me. I think you're reading emotions into what I'm writing that I don't feel at all.

220

Where have I been affected by online criticism?

110

Well that doesn't make me a lobbyist at all? I'm funded to promote EA ways of thinking, not defend data centers.

140

No I mean, like, you're saying it's weird that I'm 'taking this personally' where what I'm doing is responding to attacks on my background motives by saying 'that's not relevant and I'm not paid to defend data centers anyway.' I don't see why that's bad or something to criticize

120

I'm not a lobbyist? Am I not allowed to say "Hey this person is attacking me as a person, so I'm going to respond to the specific accusations"?
