Only 16% of people in the UK know net immigration has fallen (radically, at that). 49% think it has gone up. 67% of people with negative views about immigration think it has gone up. Wanting lower net immigration when you haven’t got a clue about what’s going on is … highly problematic.

Thank you for the columns so far! A moment to mention that my late mother, who was 82 when you started writing FT columns and who lived to a very advanced age, was a great fan of yours. (Not to say I haven’t been, of course 🙂). Congratulations and good luck.

Andy Burnham PM Alert Perhaps this is boring. But much discussion of Andy Burnham becoming PM ignores it. To be PM you need to be an MP able to command a majority in the House of Commons. Andy Burnham is the only MP able to. How long that will last, we don’t know. The end.

I like the idea that “Thatcherism was needed”. Quaint. But not necessarily what one might expect from the FT in 2026. Still, Burnham certainly has a lot to prove. We can all agree on that.

Right! Great advice. My son has already studied it twice (in English translation) with good classics teachers overseeing the process. Taking that together with the recommendation of the current teacher to watch the film, your view encourages me to think a visit to the cinema is in order.

Well, later in the piece she does say “it’s not for everyone”. So there is that.

I take the view that Mr Farage has ridden a wave, not created, significantly intensified or directed it. He’s highly unpopular (that isn’t a new phenomenon). A front man, perhaps. Massively over-hyped and indulged, certainly. A political heavyweight, no.
