These cultural narratives are particularly useful to families at the upper end of the economic spectrum. Instead of feeling guilty over any good fortune & economic advantage, they feel assured that they are worthy of their wealth, as these blessings are only achieved through hard work & sacrifice.

In her 2024 book "Holding It Together: How Women Became America’s Safety Net", @jessicacalarco.com finds mothers who embrace conservative religious ideologies are much more likely to also embrace individual merit, hard work, & sacrifice as vital tenets of God’s ideal system for our society.

Christian nationalism helps legitimize the economic status quo, unequal as it is, for higher earning Americans by marking capitalism and meritocratic economic values as sacred and the will of the Christian God.

These findings suggest that Christian nationalism’s influence around perceptions of economic inequality is mostly about preserving traditional economic social hierarchies to the advantage of those who have historically benefited from those inequalities.
