Right after I confirmed a new interview for my #BlackProvincetown project, I received an email, just now, from another key informant who ALSO agreed to be interviewed! Amaze amaze amaze!

The little girl in me who dreamed, at 9 years old, of “becoming an author”, is GEEKING over a whole set of shelves dedicated to my own books along with other volumes in which I’m published 🥹🥹🥹

And the best part is that I am obligated to take zero meetings in there for a whole year and change! The office is just for meeeeeeeeeeeee!

Aesthetics are increasingly important to me and not just because I’m doing fieldwork in the oldest continuous arts colony in the United States. I find that I need beauty around me, beauty that reflects me and my tastes, suffusing spaces where I think, read and write, to feel focused and inspired..

Suffice it to say that my last campus office was.. not like this. Neither was the one before that, or before that. Even my offices at Harvard sucked. I've never had a work space with this much intentional aesthetic pleasure, so many love letters to Blackness and Black women in particular.

My wife has been the GOAT when it comes to just about everything including helping me finally get this not so new office together, endless packing and unpacking + crossing multiple state lines to return with me to my old job and retrieve my archive/research books (another story for another time)

The design reflects the fact that I want every single sight-line in the office to show me something beautiful, something Black, something colorful, inspiring, life-giving. Reminders of where I've been, who I come from, who I work for and serve, the people who love me and support me, near and far..

These are images from my bulletin board, curated with objects and memories from places I've lived, played and worked, thank you cards and notes from friends, colleagues and students, ephemera from research sites and this archival newspaper from 1863 featuring the image of an enslaved Black woman..

My sabbatical tagline is "If you see me on campus, no you didn't!"

Next up: laying down a carpet for the reading nook, hanging wall art and white board installation!

I *love* how my curated campus office redesign is shaping up.. especially hype about the shelves honoring Black art, Black girlhood and Black/Africana feminist texts! ❤️✨

So I’m choosing to reframe that anthem as a very, VERY effective form of political protest.. #wpbl
