In total, I wrote about three dozen stories about how Mississippi is managing money won from companies that contributed to the opioid epidemic. Tons of things surprised me about this story.

Finally, the legislative session — where lawmakers decided where Mississippi’s opioid settlements could go next, and what those closest to the crisis think of that.

There was lots of reporting. A trip to Hattiesburg, where I learned how local governments could consider these funds. Meetings at Jackson government buildings. Lots of emails and calls from my desks, asking for records about how opioid money was being spent.

When I moved to MS in April 2025, I didn’t know how the state was managing opioid settlements. Turns out, a lot of the public didn’t either. Even the state’s recovery advocates, many who had suffered from the opioid epidemic, didn’t know much about the money.
