(A rhetorical Q because I know from what you're saying here you share my exasperation!)

A dose of realism, Demmy :) Yes I think there are sources of funding other than the library funding for D2O. I completely see what you're saying but I think, does it really cost them anything reputationally to acknowledge the communities that support them or that they draw from in different ways?

But Sam, might you have said, "It engendered a lot of copycat models… and that’s really what we wanted to see."

It's one thing annoying other publishers because you can't be gracious but this is another and more self-defeating level. These libraries are funding your programme! Do you want them to continue to do so?

Aha wait WHAT?! Not 'the libraries that support MIT Press Direct2Open'?! I mean it wouldn't surprise me if they receive additional funding as well as the income from the libraries that support the scheme, but in either case there are much better ways of wording this.

Love to TRAILBLAZE a cooperative approach that others are welcome to COPY

OLH as well is always making me think, especially (for my own role) in terms of its advocacy and outreach, and in helping to stay in touch with what's going on in the community-led OA journals world!

Ah that's very kind Martin! And likewise your thinking, writing & work over the years has been very influential & inspiring. Rupert has the gift of being able to disagree passionately with people but still have warm & cordial conversations with them; it's one of many things I hope I am learning!

Yep, and the marketing I've seen has always made heavy play of this being a first of its kind etc. This combination of not acknowledging others along with trumpeting your own influence and talking about others being 'copycats' is really not great imo.

Can I interest you in high-margin recurring revenue streams and meaningful shareholder value?

020

But! a high-margin, recurring revenue stream!

120

...nor for a HE system that's visibly disintegrating, with library budgets under increasing strain and academics either laid off or overburdened with increasing workload and expectations amid heightening competition for jobs. Good for "driving meaningful shareholder value" though.
