"Months before the DRC officially declared its latest Ebola outbreak on 15 May, the disease was already sowing fear and death in Mongbwalu, a gold mining town in Ituri province, an unpublished analysis by three researchers suggests." www.science.org/content/arti...

This isn’t a novel US foreign policy agenda: it’s just more in the open. Immediately after the ICC Rome Statute was adopted, the Bush Admin negotiated more than 100 bilateral immunity deals. I point this out because any future reckoning of the US & international law is much bigger than one term.

it’s insane how much admin america’s health care system loads onto individuals: calling your insurance(s) for basic pre authorizations, vacation overrides, co-pays, deductibles, coverage issues, billing etc etc Aussie Medicare is one card, no nonsense. Universal Health Coverage is brilliant.

these display books are so common in Australian. they're great for keeping documents protected but aren't bulky, and the rings let you add or remove plastic pockets. i've tried to find an American version so many times and i've come to the conclusion that they're just not a thing here???

I will never, ever understand Americans’ approach and response to guns. No explanation about the policy landscape, money in politics, fear, or rights makes any actual sense. It’s a failure that goes to the heart of the republic as a society. www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news...

gathering four decades of immunisation records for the US green card process has meant interacting with multiple Australian jurisdictions, from the local shire level to the national level, and I swear this is a deliberate choice to make you experience intense saudade as a final boss level

No one talks about how the hardest part of multidisciplinary collaboration is recognizing and respecting expertise. Natural scientists and social scientists have different approaches. Whether Quant, Qual or Doctrinal sometimes very similar concepts like causation have very different definitions.

In my historical methods training, I was always taught “we start with a historical question.” I would never use “I’m testing a hypothesis” in my work. I might have a working theory or a working hypothesis, but I’m certainly never *testing* it. That’s ripe for cherry-picked, law office history.

Kenya’s High Court was set to convene yesterday on the US Ebola quarantine facility but I’ve not heard any update. Kenya Sec of Health Duale denies 7 US doctors are quarantined in Kenya, saying they are following the court’s order, but the US says otherwise. @alexip718.com have you heard anything?

The Kenya Times

Aden Duale hard-pressed to explain reports about Ebola-exposed American workers under quarantine in Kenya. Did Duale disobey the court after narrowly escaping jail? Here are the details: thekenyatimes.com/7kww

“We warn readers that the content of this study might be distressing” This is the first time I’ve read such a line on a research paper and it is accurate: directly tying a significant outbreak to British colonization. It also (unsurprisingly) substantiates Indigenous histories of disease spread.
