When I worked on the border with immigrants and refugees so many of them had very legitimate fears for their lives if they returned. Unfortunately our government doesn’t care and does everything it can to deport them back. And does no record keeping of how many are killed afterwards.

I’ve been wanting a 🏳️‍🌈tank top for a while and then someone randomly gifted me rainbow yarn so I decided to make it myself! I may not have finished it in June, but I’m proud to be part of a community of people who live authentically every day of the year!

Having a very surreal week, trading off advising incoming students about majors and courses with finalizing the sample chapter, Choosing a Major, of my book proposal, How to Succeed in College. I absolutely love the interplay of my research, teaching, and service and how I get to support students.

Academics are so focused on our goals we often don’t take the time to celebrate enough. This past weekend friends and family from across the country joined to celebrate me in getting tenure. What a joyful weekend. I’m so grateful to my community that helped get me here ❤️

Additionally, we need to consider the negative consequences of a policy like this. When grades become a scarce commodity that only a limited number can have, it creates a culture of competitive instead of cooperation. I want my students to peer edit, review work, and learn together.

I am always deeply skeptical of grade inflation being identified as the key problem. And so too at Harvard. Yes, they have a seemingly absurd number of A’s, but the core problem is the lack of focus on learning. Students are permitted to enroll in courses that meet at the same time.

For the first time since 2018, I officially have NO audio files needing to be corrected in my transcribing site from my longitudinal interviews projects! Major shout out to my undergrad RA this semester who corrected the final 85 transcripts, out of the total 391. She was amazing!

I am proud to be a sociologist and would happily add another sociology tshirt to my sadly limited collection. BUT I am not proud to be a member of ASA right now. What a bizarre year to choose to sell tshirts and have an ASA tshirt day. Almost like a sign of allegiance to the org? No thanks.

There were predictions this might happen but it’s still devastating. As a cis woman when I compete in women’s sports, I want to compete against all women. I don’t care about your genes, if you live life as a woman you are a woman. Period.

I really enjoy giving students feedback on their work, but I loathe attaching grades to it. Every time I give a student a grade, I feel the emotional weight of how that grade can impact access to resources like scholarships, grad school, academic standing, and more.

Two years ago on medical leave, too disabled from long covid to live independently, sitting in my parents' house thinking I wouldn't be able to work again, I gave up on this dream. But today I'm updating my email signature because the Board made it official: I am now an Associate Professor!!!

My students LOVED learning about the specific examples Jen found during class today about school choice. It was a nice concrete way to show how privatizing education results in financial mismanagement (charter schools) and ridiculous spending (ESAs). They were outraged at the audacity.

It’s important to realize that this only refers to rescinding the Dear Colleague letter. Many other anti DEI bans are in place at the national and state level. But this shows why it is important to not comply as if it is inevitable. We must resist, organize, and support lawsuits.
