Major airspace closures for civil aviation announced by both Pakistan (all airspace) and India (along the border with Pakistan) in the last few hours. We're possibly about to witness the start of the most intense and broad-spectrum direct conflict between two nuclear-armed states ever.

This is similar to the rallying cry "Je suis Charlie.” Either you support free speech or you don’t. Either you support due process or you don’t. We are all in this together, regardless of our opinions or the content of our speech.
Meloni faces questions after Italy frees Libyan general accused of war crimes
Twelve years ago a federal appeals court ruled that the CIA could memory-hole a photo of a prisoner whom the CIA had tortured because the photo might reveal something about how the CIA had tortured him. Remembered that when I read this @carolrosenbergnyt.bsky.social story.
Now updated with a link to one of the detainee's self portraits of his torture, as shown to a jury at his sentencing trial.
Carol RosenbergMORE BREAKING NEWS: The United States has repatriated two Malaysian prisoners from Guantanamo Bay, concluding a secret military operation. The rare transfer, a day after the Pentagon delivered another prisoner to Kenya, reduced the detainee population to 27 men. www.nytimes.com/2024/12/18/u...
Great piece @christinalamb.bsky.social on investigations into the Assad regime's crimes and CIJA's work. Wiley thinks Putin will send #Assad back to 🇸🇾 within 3 years. I doubt this will happen under Putin. When the regime changes in Moscow, this will become possible. www.thetimes.com/article/939e...
The new government of the post-Assad #Syria would do well to accede to the ICC Statute and refer its situation to the ICC Prosecutor as soon as possible. Before then, it should grant the Court jurisdiction over the situation in Syria since 2011 under article 12(3) of the Statute.
With so many fleeing Assad's brutal regime in #Syria, I hope open source investigators are watching for opportunities to scoop up perpetrators in countries where universal jurisdiction can be exercised. Also, the next gov't should refer itself to the #ICC. It's about time... 🤞
I wish journalists who interviewed Trump about mass-deportations would ask him why, if he plans to prioritize "criminals," he did literally the opposite last time he was president. Trump's ICE deprioritized serious criminals, and filled jails with asylum-seekers instead. www.cato.org/blog/trump-r...
History must never forget the depths of depravity and inhumanity that were Assad's prisons and the horror that they wrought upon Syrian society. Let freedom now also aspire to bring justice.

France has a warrant out for Bashar al-Assad’s arrest. The primary legal argument against the warrant (albeit one that had thus far failed in the French courts) had been that he was Syria’s sitting head of state. That argument terminates w/ his presidency. www.justiceinitiative.org/newsroom/fre...
My heart is so full seeing Syrians celebrating, statues toppled, torture cells opened, Russians fleeing. Syria has so much uncertainty still ahead, but would never ever be free under the butcher & war criminal Assad. Hearing friends talk of being able to go back to see their homes again at last 😭🥰
What I gather from accounts I trust on X is that a coup attempt led by Maher al-Assad, Bashar's brother, is under way in Damascus
Statement by the International Criminal Court's Presidency on threats against the judges and other elected officials. It is unusual for the ICC Presidency to issue such statements, which is primarily the job of the Assembly and States Parties. This is a sign they are not doing enough to counter
A step forward: Chile, Costa Rica, Spain, France, Luxembourg and Mexico submitted a referral today to the ICC in the situation of Afghanistan, citing the worsening conditions and the seriousness of the situation for women and girls. www.minrel.gob.cl/noticias-ant...
