In all my years teaching martial arts, the one thing holding people back the most is ableism. The idea there is a "perfect" physical form for it. 3/

My pitch was someone overweight, or a person with mobility issues. Someone not of the idealized "martial artist" stereotype. The weird alpha male people of the internet shouted it down, since the Avatar must be a "warrior" or whatever. As an overweight martial artist, I found that ridiculous. 2/

After watching the Avatar Aang movie, I'm really happy to know that Pavi will be next Avatar in the series. I remember when Korra ended, there were online discourse about what the next Avatar would be like. And I remember wanting someone not as physically abled as the ones we've gotten. 1/

There were so many scenes where I thought, "Man, this would be amazing on the big screen."

Oh Witch Hat Atelier, I am so torn by you. On one hand, you are wonderfully written, beautifully drawn, incredibly nuanced, and is all around masterpiece. But on the other hand, due to my work, reading you feels like taking work home. I can't help but look at you and go, "I know that already".

A lot of stories you have to dig a little to get at the ideological messaging. But nope, Witch Hat hits you over the head with it. It's really effective for some people though, and I can definitely still enjoy its writing.

Witch Hat Atelier is a very well written and great manga. But it can also be kind of frustrating to read, because it is progressivism 101. And being media literate enough to see that makes the fantasy escapism hard to enjoy, since I just keep going back to, "Oh, I recognise that problem IRL".
