BMW doesn't care about customer retention 5-10 years down the line. There's always a new generation of buyers who want their beemer. The message will only be received if this move prompts people to sell and demonstrably reduces sales of new BMWs.

Pretty clear this is a trial for BMW to see just how much consumers will put up with, and if consumers don't respond with selling their BMWs then the company will have confirmed they can get away with it.

Agreed but unfortunately Lego was becoming insolvent by the end of the 90s. Star Wars basically saved the company. That said it's pretty sad to see so many of their original IPs have been completely neglected aside from the occasional nostalgia re-release.
