@celinegounder.com fact-checks and contextualizes several claims made during the Fauci hearing, showing where accurate details were presented in potentially misleading ways. We need more of this so the historical record remains accurate! #publichealth #medsky #idsky #episky #fauci #senatehearing

80,000 animals at Wuhan market? Nationwide data. At the market: 457 specimens. Removed Jan 1, before sampling. No testing of raccoon dogs, palm civets, bamboo rats—the likely intermediate hosts. https://www.celinegounder.com/p/fauci-senate-hearing-fact-check Read & subscribe: celinegounder.com

Excellent reporting by Laura Martín Agudelo on why Cyclospora outbreaks are so hard to trace. One key epi point: case reporting lags of up to 6 weeks significantly impairs outbreak investigation and response. #EpiSky #Cyclospora #idsky @martinenserink.bsky.social www.science.org/content/arti...

Why is tracing the source of cyclosporiasis outbreaks so difficult?Parasite’s biology, combined with logistical issues and budget cuts, make tracking it a major challengewww.science.org

CDC’s July 24 Cyclospora Outbreak epi curve has prompted many interpretations, this is my preliminary take, which I’ll update as more data become available. Source: lnkd.in/eyJncA-f @altcdc.altgov.info @fda.gov #publichealth #cyclospora #episky #idsky #medsky #TaylorFarms #TacoBell #Lettuce

A defense of MAHA that begins by conceding its political champions wrecked scientific infrastructure, promoted antivaccine views, and undermined expertise doesn’t rebut the critics, it summarizes them. Public health doesn’t need MAHA. MAHA needs public health’s credibility!!

@bethmariem.bsky.social Thank you for correctly describing FoodNet’s objective. It is essential for tracking trends and burden of foodborne illnesses, not real-time outbreak detection or response. The cuts matter, but so does precision, and too many accounts have blurred that distinction.

Beth Marie Mole

There's been a lot of pointing to cuts to CDC's FoodNet amid the cyclosporiasis surge, suggesting the cuts hurt responses. They didn't. The cuts are bad for other reasons, but FoodNet is not for real-time detection/response. www.washingtonpost.com/health/2026/...

Apparently these funding opportunities include relocation grants for entire countries. Up to $80 million for data, surveys, and surveillance but apparently not a dollar for cartography!! #Africa #GlobalHealth #Cartography #DataVisualization #MapFail

We can't even. "A senior US State Department official displayed a map of Africa that was completely wrong before high-level officials from African nations, including some whose countries had been mislabelled." open.substack.com/pub/emilysba...

Absolutely agree with Dr. Hammer @epihammer.bsky.social . Data and hypotheses generated through #Fieldepi inform academic research in many ways. That’s why funding for shoe-leather epidemiology must be preserved, it strengthens both public health practice and the sciences. #EpiSky #PublicHealth

Dr Charlotte Hammer

Even better, shoe leather epidemiology and academic excellence are not mutually exclusive! Interactions between #Fieldepi and academia can be mutually extremely enriching. I am a field epidemiologist and an Assistant Professor @cser.bsky.social @cam.ac.uk and fellow @downingcollege.bsky.social.
