I think the tariffs and gutting a bunch of industrial policy has more of an effect than deficits

I live in Pennsylvania, the fifth biggest state in the country and our yearly state budget is 50 billion. NYC has a 126 billion dollar budget.

I mean if I sell apples bananas and oranges in my corner store and the grocery store has them 30% off then it’s cheaper to go there than an actual produce supplier

90% of our poverty problems break down to “these people don’t have enough money” and I’m disappointed that the left is joining the right on the idea that just giving them money isn’t a solution.

I’m pretty sure the food deserts still have bodegas and the like operating in them that sell some of the necessities that a real grocery store would, so they’ll probably be harmed. And maybe that’s fine! But I don’t think we should just ignore that part of it.

What would happen to that business model if we built more housing?

Charleston is the biggest city in the state with 45,000 people, which doesn’t even rank in the top 100 US cities. It’s just an extremely small state, it has more in common with a place like Montana but it’s plopped near the east coast so it gets compared to its neighbors

Pittsburgh had a renaissance with medical and a little tech because education was good, WVU is trying to do that in Morgantown but it’s an uphill climb, especially with PGH so close.

It’s an odd place topographically, usually rural states can rely on ag or manufacturing but all the places to put manuf. are already full, and there’s not many places to grow crops at scale. All that’s left is tourism, which they do see some of but competition in the northeast is tough for that.

The Jones act sucks but it isn’t what’s limiting WV The problem WV has is that there isn’t any flat land, try to build some massive port and manufacturing hub when 500 yards from the river the ground rises to 1800 feet in the span of a few feet.

The problem with a big tent party is everyone thinks their thing should be prioritized first, so there’s always going to be a half dozen constituencies *furious* over sidelining their thing, which is the most important thing in history.
