Has anybody tried to study the impact of Minnesota’s ex post facto laws and lawsuits following the 2007 I-35W bridge collapse? This was near the start of my career and I remember being pretty shocked that an engineering firm would have ex post facto liability for something designed 40 years prior.

The state took legal action against the successor firm to the consultant that had designed the original bridge decades before. Using consultants means there’s someone else’s insurance to raid first before the state takes liability.
