Does anyone out there own a Thermomix? I'm trying to understand it.

Our daughter calls it her second child. She loves it!

Yes. It is the best cooking device I have owned and basically changed the entire way we plan/cook meals. Happy to answer questions if you have specifics.

Example?

Sure. The device is a (guided) cookbook, shopping list generator, meal scheduler, scale, chopper (peeler), mixer/stirrer (whipping), electric heater (sauteing, boiling, steaming, frying, etc... in one device that automates steps like heating to certain temperatures or mixing for certain a duration.

In practice this means I plan a week of meals at once and auto-generate a detailed shopping list (that I need to manually refine) using the app. I may have cooked 10 to 15 different recipes with variations on repeat, mostly things I learned to cook at home. Now I try at least one new recipe weekly.

Using a garbanzo soup with veggies and chorizo as an example. The device prompts you to add 1 leak (you have to hand cut it into circles), then 150g of carrots (also roughly hand cut), but it measures the weight, and 50g of oil (also measures the weight).

Then is prompts you to turn a dial with a preset time and velocity to chop the ingredients. The next prompt asks you to add chorizo and broth and then again, turn a dial with a preset time, temperature, and (stirring speed). When the device is automating stirring, heating, etc... I prep other parts.

Or I clean up. That recipe in particular includes about 40 minutes of stirring time that is automated away. Beyond the thermomix, you only need a knife and maybe a cutting board for that recipe, no other cooking utensils. The soup comes out the same every time (although I can vary it as I wish).

The next day I might make a salmon and coleslaw sandwich with it (steaming the salmon with an included attachment and making the slaw, like I made the soup). Later that week I'll use the same device to make a vegan curry with tofu (all in the device, including rice), and a cheese cake...

Which does require a baking pan and oven.

To summarize, it makes planning, shopping, cooking and cleaning easier. If you love to cook, it may take some of the joy out of the process and it probably does not replicate the quality of those processes in all instances, but in most cases the food I make now is definitely better than it was.
