A crowd is singing a waiata* to bless the closing of a community gallery. Voice merging and echoing in an empty room. The song ends and a man (40s?), speaking in a faint English accent says with quiet satisfaction: "That's the first time I got all the words right. I'm proud of that."(2)

I attended a friend's exhibition opening in Wellington a month ago and the waiatas (planned and impromptu) had me welling up - they were beautiful

Oh that's so lovely! I always love it when people sing. There's something so wonderful about a group of people singing together. It really is magical. (Also, did you want to name drop your friend here if they have a website?)

She took part in a teeny tiny exhibition of Maori weaving. She was one of maybe 20 artists. All the weavers were newly exploring the Maori language. It was beautiful.
