As for set books I hated... Very hard to say. Browning left me cold/bored, but there was little I really detested! "The Lord of the Flies" and "Animal Farm" both scared me so much I could never revisit them beyond a certain point in each (Piggy's glasses; Boxer's death), but I admired them hugely.
