Ah, Garry Sobers. Growing up in the 1980s with a quasi-religious relationship to test cricket, I always had a feeling that I'd missed out on the real heroics, his most of all.
My boyhood hero, RIP. Watched him on the BBC's rolling Test coverage in late 60s and early 70s. Fabulous batsman and bowler and fielder - and you would guess he'd be brilliant keeping wicket too if he had to.
Test cricket in the 1960s was generally cautious, boring and defensive, but Gary Sobers's West Indies sides and series were a brilliant exception to the rule. He played like a batsman and all-rounder from the future.
