My preferred AI metaphor is actually Asbestos. - Seemingly magical properties - Developed and experimented with to make endless products - Poisoned countless communities in it's creation - Everything it was used for eventually becomes a toxic hazard to mitigate & it's in the fucking walls now

Trying out a new metaphor: "A.i." = cocaine. Cocaine is inevitable! Cocaine can enhance your creativity! Cocaine can make us all faster and more efficient! If your kid doesn't learn how to use cocaine, they'll get left behind!

Wait I went to the internet to learn more about this and asbestos isn’t actually manufactured but MINED? I had no idea and assumed the substance itself was synthetic. (These harms all still true, but perhaps more accurate to say “its use in creating” rather than “its creation”) who’d have thought??

Nope, it's a rock. It comes from Serpentine. I've actually been to an old abandoned asbestos mine and saw it laying all over the ground. I was also 13 and dumb and picked up a bunch cos Serpentine is a pretty green color before someone told me to put that shit down lol
