One of my longtime favourite creatives just this week started a substack and I don't know them well enough to be like "hey PLEASE immediately transfer to ghost or buttondown," but I really want to say exactly that.

What if instead of starting substacks in twenty-fucking-twenty-six people learned to give one iota of a fuck about whether they want to associate themselves with nazis.

I encourage you to! You never know whose input may matter to them 🤔

Seriously, tell them. You can be gentle about it, but they deserve to know why you won't be following them there.

Yeah I did it anyway. If I can reach out to my state senator about it, I can ask it of somebody whose work has meant a lot to me over the years.

easier to transfer now than later down the line

Time to fill out a feedback form methinks. "As much as I love your content and know it must've been tortuous to set up your substack, I genuinely hope I can enjoy it on a less problematic platform and I worry every day you spend developing your substack becomes one day more work against leaving it."

I have a friend who runs a substack. It's one of her sources of income. I'm considering reaching out to ask if I could do a direct transfer to her, and tell her I don't feel ok supporting Substack. Obviously not a systemic solution but it maybe opens up a conversation. That's my hope, anyway.

You don't have to know an artist well to recommend that they veer away from nazis. Also, pointing them to the alternatives could lead you to a deeper interaction with them.
