It was funded through a kickstarter so they had some funding for it and the kickstarter itself is kind of a market research. They knew there was interest.
Not saying they were drowning in success but if I was funded 20k right now for my own project I would feel reassured to work on it for a couple months. They probably didn’t expect the success that came after but didn’t just quit their jobs to pursue a crazy dream.
