There Can Only Be One: Between 1836 & 1851, at least 5 statistical societies started up in the US. Only ASA survived. The others never got off the ground or changed focus. Thanks mostly to Edward Jarvis (ASA President for over 30 yrs), ASA somehow held together for the next 50 years
