You have to take a written test, then prove you can properly and safely operate a motor vehicle before you get a drivers license.
Guns on the other hand…
If you wanna carry in Maryland there's a 16 hour course ,fingerprint, and shooting requirement of 25 rounds-15ft-70%.

There's still a 4 hour course and fingerprint required just to buy.

Criminals are still unaffected.
If we could apply such strict rules across the board…perhaps gun violence would at least become a bit more scarce. Still…no guns at all would be better.
The other thing is…if you’re going to go through all this for owning and using a gun, an object specifically invented to hurt or kill…why can you not take classes to learn self-defense? Learn how to de-escalate situations, how to disarm someone, how to take someone down WITHOUT a weapon!
All due respect,that’s not realistic. It takes martial artists years,even decades to learn to disarm someone like that. I had a friend who was a deputy and a negotiator. He didn’t learn it in the academy,it was a talent he discovered he had after some time on the job.
