the reason reflexive anti-americanism is bad is that it breeds cynicism, and cynicism breeds anti-social behavior. if a basically pro-social attitude is not hegemonic, the ability to achieve any kind of social justice or redistributive end gets that much harder.

any righting of the wrongs of capitalism relies on the imposition of rules and requires buy-in from people who are inconvenienced by those rules. the only way to bridge that is a sense that we owe each other a certain level of behavior, and 'don't poop on the train', 'don't shoplift' are examples

a redistributionist vision is not progressive or even necessarily good if it's premised on a zero-sum worldview. likewise, if antisocial behavior is justified by pointing out endemic injustice in society, you can only get to the idea that 'society can be better' by essentially magical thinking

I was thinking recently how much certain theories of history or society, especially now the circular theories (e.g. that fourth turning nonsense) fits into this static zero sum view of things, and encourages atrocious worldviews
